LODGE OF HOPE - No 9838 (2008)

In order to accommodate the increasing interest in Freemasonry in the Eastern states of Nigeria, a new Lodge, to be known as Lodge of Hope, was proposed in Awka, the Anambra State capital, in 2006. The proposal was made by Lodge of Fidelity No 5779 based in Enugu and enthusiastically supported by many. It may be recalled that Awka had in 1991 been made the capital of the new state of Anambra, as a consequence of which there was a massive movement of civil servants from Enugu to the new capital.

The Founding Worshipful Master was H.R.M. Igwe Alfred Achebe, CFR, the Obi of Onitsha, ably supported by Dr. Nathaniel Anowi as Senior Warden, Dr. Celestine Mbaezue as Junior Warden and 12 other senior Masons living in the area. The Protem Secretary of the new Lodge was Dr. G S C Okoye, now the Assistant District Grand Master for that area.

The formal Consecration of Lodge of Hope took place in Lodge Unity (SC) Masonic Hall, Awka, on Saturday 5th April 2008 and was attended by 46 visitors in addition to the 22 Founder members.

The Lodge has continued to meet regularly at the same venue on the first Saturday in the odd months of the year.
