IKEJA LODGE - NO. 8670 (1975)

Ikeja Lodge was formed with the view of bringing together Masons of sister constitutions living in and around Ikeja. The warrant for the formation was given on 10th September, 1975. The consecration ceremony was performed by Nat. Sowande Sole, District Grand Master, on March 19, 1976. Twenty Seven (27) founding members of different constitutions signed the petition but during the Consecretion ceremony six (6) founding members were unavoidably absent. The Objective of the petitions was to promote Freemasonry in Nigeria, and assist the less privileged ones in the society by way of embarking on charitable projects and giving alms to the poor.

The first Master of the Lodge was A. G, Simey P.D.J.G.D. The Senior Warden was L. L. Tychus Lawson and the Junior Warden was R. H. Johnson. The first initiation ceremony was conducted on May 21, 1976 at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja. The first Initiate was Chief Isaac Bandele Ogun. Regular meetings of the Lodge have been shifted to the St. George’s Masonic Temple, Lagos.

The departure of many expatriate founding members due to Nigeria’s indigenisation policy affected the Lodge. Masons from sister lodges, mainly from Travellers’ Lodge No. 3726 and Fraternity Lodge No. 7477 supported the young lodge which can now boast of a stable, active membership. The Lodge has increased in number from the size it was when it was formed by the petitioners. Membership has continued to grow on the register of the United Grand Lodge of England.
